What Is Ruqyah Shariah?
Ruqyah refers to recitation, supplication and seeking protection through words that are permissible in Islam. In Islamic tradition, Ruqyah may involve verses from the Qur'an, authentic supplications and remembrance of Allah.
Ruqyah is understood as a means of seeking Allah's help and protection. The benefit and outcome are ultimately in the hands of Allah.
Ruqyah should not be presented as a guaranteed cure or as a replacement for appropriate medical or professional care. Where medical attention is needed, seeking qualified medical advice remains important.
Ruqyah in the Qur'an and Sunnah
The Qur'an describes itself as a source of healing and mercy for believers. Allah says:
“And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.”
This verse is among the Qur'anic texts commonly discussed when explaining the spiritual benefit and healing-related guidance associated with the Qur'an.
Ruqyah Shariah in the Sunnah
Ruqyah also has a basis in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Authentic narrations describe the use of permissible Ruqyah and supplication.
“Present your Ruqyah to me. There is no harm in Ruqyah as long as it does not contain shirk.”
This narration is an important basis for understanding that Ruqyah is permissible when it remains within the boundaries of Islamic teachings.
What Does Islamic Ruqyah Involve?
A sound approach to Ruqyah focuses on permissible recitation, supplication and remembrance of Allah rather than practices that conflict with Islamic teachings.
Qur'anic Recitation
Recitation of relevant verses from the Qur'an as part of seeking Allah's help and protection.
Authentic Supplications
Use of permissible and authentic supplications taught in Islamic sources.
Remembrance of Allah
Encouraging remembrance of Allah and reliance upon Him.
Avoiding Prohibited Practices
Avoiding practices involving shirk, unknown formulas or methods that are contrary to Islamic principles.
Ruqyah and Medical Care
Seeking Ruqyah does not require a person to abandon appropriate medical care. Physical and psychological symptoms can have many possible causes, and qualified healthcare professionals can help assess medical concerns.
Ruqyah Noor does not present Ruqyah as a substitute for diagnosis, medication, emergency care or other necessary professional treatment.
Serious, sudden or emergency symptoms should be addressed by appropriate healthcare services without delay.
When Do People Seek Ruqyah?
People may seek Islamic Ruqyah for a variety of personal and spiritual concerns. Some individuals associate their experiences with matters such as the evil eye, sihr or spiritual distress.
However, experiencing a particular symptom does not by itself establish a specific spiritual cause. Ruqyah should therefore be approached with care, without making unsupported diagnoses or guarantees.
